Mosquitoes beware: Charleston Co. to begin aerial spraying May 23

 

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Its getting hot out, which means its mosquito time in the Lowcountry.

Charleston County Mosquito Control will be doing all they can do reduce the numbers of these pesky insects when they begin aerially spraying standing water for aquatic stage mosquitoes on Thursday, May 23. The spraying will continue through June 3.

Expect to see low-flying planes between the hours of 6 a.m. and 9 p.m.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Charleston’s premiere multi-arts festivals will return for 17 days of music, dance, theatre, and art beginning Friday.

The 2013 Spoleto Festival USA and Piccolo Spoleto Festival will bring hundreds of events to the Lowcountry May 24 through June 9. While a couple of events are scheduled to take place Thursday, the festivals do not officially get underway until Friday.

Spoleto Festival USA will showcase nationally and internationally renowned artists to the Charleston while Piccolo Spoleto highlights local and regional artists. Piccolo is operated by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs.

JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC)- The Charleston Tea Plantation is celebrating its first tea harvest of the season today with a live music festival featuring Old Crow Medicine Show.

The 7th Annual First Flush FesTEAval will take place Saturday, May 18, with gates opening at 1 p.m. and music going well into the night. This two-stage festival kicks off the first harvest from the Charleston Tea Plantation, America's only tea plantation.

In addition to the live music, First Flush will also feature plenty of food trucks, vendors, and a special area for the kids to let loose.

Postal workers to collect food Saturday for Stamp Out Hunger

 

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Millions of Americans are struggling to find their next meal, and on Saturday, helping them can be as easy as taking a walk to your mailbox.

The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive returns all throughout the United States Saturday, May 11 2013. Presented by the National Association of Letter Carriers and Campbell Soup Company, this food drive encourages people to collect a bag of non-perishable food items and place the bag by your mailbox.

Postal workers will pick up your donation and deliver it to a local food bank.

In 2012, Stamp Out Hunger collected 70.5 million pounds of food, bringing its grand total of donations to 1.2 billion pounds of food collect in the drive's 20 year history.

Pick up your May 4 Adopt-A-Highway cleanup supplies Wednesday

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Charleston County residents are encouraged to come together on May 4 to help keep our highways clean and beautiful.

Charleston County Adopt-A-Highway will hold a litter cleanup on Saturday, May 4. Volunteers can pick up supplies on Wednesday, May 1 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at S.C. Department of Transportation’s Charleston Maintenance facility located at 2401 Maintenance Way in North Charleston.

Volunteers will spend the day picking up trash along Charleston County highways, so it is important drivers keep an eye out.

“On the cleanup day, drivers are asked to be especially alert and mindful of pedestrians who are working to beautify our surroundings and protect our environment,” said Donna Gueldner, Chairman of Community Pride, Inc. of Charleston County.

In 2012, more than 50,000-pounds of litter was collected form primary and secondary roads, according to Adopt-A-Highway.
