CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Mother's Day is right around the corner, and Live 5 News wants to help you celebrate the most important woman in your life!

With Mother's Day set for Sunday, May 12, now is your chance to show the community just how special your mother is!

Airman with Lowcountry ties receives 'Wings of Gold'

 

NORFOLK, VA - Navy Lt. j. g. Jon R. Hagerman, son of Rebecca A. Robinson of Tallmadge, Ohio and John E. Hagerman, of Johns Island, S. C., was recently designated a Naval Aviator while serving with Training Squadron 22, Naval Air Station, Kingsville, Texas.

Hagerman was presented with the coveted "Wings of Gold," marking the culmination of months of flight training.

Hagerman followed a training curriculum that included basic studies in engineering and navigation, training flights in simulators, aircraft familiarizations, basic and advanced instrument training, extended navigation flights, and landings and takeoffs aboard an aircraft carrier.

Hagerman is a 2006 graduate of Tallmadge High School of Tallmadge, Ohio and joined the Navy in May 2010. He is a 2010 graduate of U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md. with a BS degree.

Charleston ranks 3rd for happiest city for Winter travel

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - It's a good time of year to be in Charleston. The Holy City ranks third for happiest city for Winter travel.

Hilton Honors partnered with Sperlings Bestplaces to find the top 10 happiest travel destinations in the United States.

Charleston was outranked by Tucson, Ariz. and St. Petersburg, Fla.

Several cities from California made the list as well as Washington D.C. and Las Vegas.

Why Charleston? Well, it's warm and a beautiful southern city full of hundreds of years of history, according to the survey.

CofC to honor community leader with screening, workshop and bus tour

The College of Charleston will host a series of events to honor and recognize the work of community leader, Bill Saunders. The College will host a documentary screening February 2, a workshop on February 4, and a bus tour on February 5.  

The events are free and open to the public.  Reservations are required for the bus tour.
 
Bill Saunders, an activist from John’s Island is known for being an organizer in the 1969 hospital workers strike.  In the height of the Civil Rights movement, Saunders had a local radio station called the Informant that gave voice to local activists.  Today, Saunders continues his community activism on projects like stopping the I-526 expansion.

JAMES ISLAND (WCSC) - The Charleston Crab House on James Island will host their charity oyster roast tonight for a member of their staff, who was severely injured last Satuday in a car wreck.

32-year-old Andy Petit has been the kitchen supervisor for the restaurant for the past 8 years.  He is in the ICU at MUSC and his lower body is paralyzed.  He's a James Island native and he lives on Johns Island.

Tickets officially go on sale this Saturday, and the first camper has already been spotted at the ticket office.  Oren Chase says the live experience is about more than the music, "Besides the music it's all about the whole experience. making eye contact, nobody in front of you, nobody walking in front of you...it's just a big difference in being way back...and you have to do stuff like this once in a while if you want to get some premium seats."
