New candidate joins the competition for mayor

There is new candidate running for mayor of Charleston, Craig Jelks, a teacher at Sangaree Middle School.

Jelks graduated from Howard University in Washington, D.C. and has a Master's Degree from Columbia University in New York.

In his campaign video titled, "The Next Mayor of Charleston," he speaks about the importance of educating young people.

Jelks now joins Mayor Joe Riley, Councilman William Gregorie and historian and journalist David Farrow as candidates for mayor.

Female politicians to speak with government students at St. John's High School

JOHN'S ISLAND (WCSC) - The government students at St. John's High School are hosting a political symposium Friday at 1:15 p.m. in the school's Media Center. 

Kiawah Island Town Council next week

KIAWAH ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - The Kiawah Island Town Council will hold a meeting Tuesday, Feb. 1.

The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. and last until 4 p.m. It will be held in the Town Hall Council Chambers.

Ways & Means Committee next week

KIAWAH ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - The Ways & Means Committee will hold a meeting Tuesday, Feb. 1.

The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. and last until 11 a.m. It will be held in the upstairs conference room at the town hall.

 

Town offices on Kiawah Island closed Monday

KIAWAH ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Town offices on Kiawah Island will be closed Monday in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday.

Offices will operate on normal business hours Tuesday.

Democrats issue filing guidelines for District 1 election

Charleston County will hold a special election for its District 1 seat after Joe McKeown's resignation.  The Charleston County Democratic Party has issued guidelines for those interested in running in its special primary for the seat.

Filing for the race will open at noon on Friday, January 7 and will close at noon on Tuesday, January 18.  Candidates will file with Truett Nettles, II, Esq. at the Law Office of Grtimball & Cabaniss, LLC at 473 Savannah Highway in Charleston.

The office will be open from 9 am to 5 pm (Monday through Friday) beginning Friday, January 7 through Tuesday, January 18, including Saturday, January 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Sunday, January 16 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.  Candidates may call (843-722-0911, ext. 330) for more information or to schedule an appointment at another time.

The filing fee for the special election is $574.08.

Charleston County to swear in new Council members Jan. 6

Charleston County Council welcomes members elected in the November 2010 race, Dickie Schweers, Joe McKeown, Teddie Pryor, Anna Johnson, and Joe Qualey, with a swearing in ceremony Thursday, January 6 at 3:30 p.m.  After the ceremony, committee meetings start at 4:15, and a special meeting of Council to elect a Chairman and Vice Chairman for 2011 will follow.
