Clam, oyster harvesting areas reopened in 3 creeks

JAMES ISLAND (WCSC) - Clam and oyster harvesting areas in three Charleston County creeks that were closed last month have been reopened, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control reported today.

"The beds in portions of Secessionville Creek, First Sisters Creek and Folly Creek down to the Folly Road Bridge have been reopened because water quality sampling results indicate bacteria levels are suitable for clam and oyster harvesting," said Mike Pearson, manager of DHEC's Shellfish Sanitation program.

JAMES ISLAND (WCSC) - Pet Helpers and the Feline Freedom Coalition are hosting a free spay/neuter clinic for feral cats in Charleston County on Sunday, October 16.

Rehabilitated sea turtles released on Kiawah

KIAWAH (WCSC) - Three sea turtles were released into the Atlantic Ocean today at Beachwalker County Park on Kiawah Island.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources teamed up with the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission and the South Carolina Aquarium for the turtle release after their successful recovery at the sea turtle hospital.

SC Aquarium to release 9 turtles at sea

The South Carolina Aquarium's rescue program will send nine turtles back to sea today.

A 200 pound loggerhead and eight green sea turtles will be released. The turtles were found in North and South Carolina, and the aquarium helped nurse some of them back to health.

The turtles will be released at Beachwalker County Park on Kiawah Island on June 3 at 3 pm. Residents are welcome to watch the event.
